Navratri, the Festival of Nine Nights, is celebrated in honor of goddesses Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati. The festival is celebrated for nine nights every year in the Hindu month of Ashvin (September-October) although as the dates of the festival are according to the Hindu calendar (which is based on the Moon), the festival may be held for a day more or a day less depending on the calendar. It coincides with the end of the rainy season. This season is considered to be an auspicious one as it is generally associated with the sowing of seeds, and watching new seeds sprout – a sign of prosperity and abundance. पूजन के प्रारम्भ में हाथ में अक्षत, जल एवं पुष्प लेकर समस्त देवताओं का स्मरण करते हुए निम्नलिखित मंत्रों का उच्चारण करें :-
