Sikh Mul (Mool) Mantra

Sikh Mool (Mul) Mantra

The Mul (Mool) Mantar is the first hymn in the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of the Sikhs. The word "Mool" means "main", "root" or "chief" and "Mantar" means "magic chant" or "magic portion". The lines in this passage state the essential creed, the basic belief, of the Sikh religion. It is a basic prayer, composed by Guru Nanak Dev ji .The "Mul Mantra" sums up Sikh beliefs about God, and is said to be Guru Nanak's first teaching. It is considered as the nucleus of the Sikh thought. The Mul mantra is very brief and rhytematic. It contains and delivers a great meaning in few words.

The Mul Mantra expresses the Sikh metaphysics - the belief in the nature of being and reality and the relationsip of individuals and the universe. Sikhism's most fundamental belief is expressed in the first three words of the Mul mantra.
