II     Sweet-n-sour Daal  II

Ingredients: Serves 4-5

  • 200gms  Bengal Gram (channa Daal)
  • 1 Onion, chopped
  • 2 chopped tomatoes
  • 4-5 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 tbsp. of Ginger paste
  • 4-5 Bay leaves (Tej patta)
  • 3 Cardamoms, powdered
  • 2 sticks of Cinnamon, powdered
  • 2 Cloves, powdered
  • 1/2 cup Raisins (Kishmish)
  • 1/4 cup Fresh Coconut, chopped
  • 1 tsp. Turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp. Cumin powder
  • Sugar to taste
  • 2 tbsp. Mustard Oil OR  Vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp. Butter
Preparation:
  • Clean and wash daal. In a deep saucepan, boil the daal with salt and turmeric in water and then simmer until the daal is cooked. Mash the cooked daal.  Keep aside.
  • Heat the Oil and half of the butter in a  pan. Fry chopped coconut pieces. Remove and keep aside.
  • Fry Onions till golden brown/
  • Make a paste of ginger, cumin and turmeric. Add this to the onions and fry for few seconds.
  • Add daal, coconut pieces, green chillies, sugar, raisins and bay leaves.
  • Add remaining butter abd let it simmer for few minutes.
  • Add ground cloves, cinnamon and cardamoms just before taking off the flame.
