Purnima (also called Poornima, Sanskrit: पूर्णिमा) is the full moon day in traditional Hindu calendar. Poornima is associated with prosperity and divinity. It is considered a highly auspicious day by Hindus and some people in India even fast on Poornima and pray to Lord Vishnu. After fasting people worship the moon god for his blessings. It is said that this pooja can be very powerful and help the devotees attain their wishes. In South India, the day is known as Pournami, while it is called "Puranmashi" in the state of Punjab and some parts of northern India. Poornima fasting might be observed either on the day of Poornima or one day before depending upon the starting time of Poornima tithi as per Hindu Lunar calendar.
